Quick answer

To make a karaoke backing track, separate the vocals from a song and keep the instrumental. In TuneStem, you can preview and download the backing music, then use it for singing practice.

This guide covers backing-track audio, not a karaoke video with scrolling lyrics.

Choose the version you want to sing

Choose the recording you want to sing along to. Check the introduction, repeated choruses, and ending—a live version or radio edit may differ from the song you have practiced. If you already have a suitable, authorized instrumental, use it directly.

Create and check the instrumental

Open TuneStem and choose Upload audio. Select an MP3 or WAV song file from your device, confirm the upload, and start separation. When processing finishes, you will have separate vocal and instrumental tracks. For the general workflow, see how to remove vocals and keep the instrumental.

You can also paste a public Suno song link as an alternative input. The Suno stems guide compares that route with Suno’s built-in option.

Choose Instrumental and listen with the vocal track muted. Check a verse and a busy chorus: the backing should let you follow the rhythm and melody without the original singer competing with your voice.

Some singing or reverb may remain, and harmonies you expected to keep may be removed. If the remaining voice is distracting or important musical parts sound damaged, try another authorized source or a purpose-made backing track.

Download the instrumental and give it a clear name, such as SongName_instrumental. Keep an unchanged copy if you plan to edit it.

Rehearse with the file you will actually use

Open the saved file on the phone, computer, or playback system you will use. Check that it plays correctly from beginning to end, then sing through it at a comfortable volume.

  • Find your entrances. Listen for the cue before your first line and after instrumental breaks. Keep enough of the introduction to find your starting note and timing.
  • Check your range. Try the highest and lowest phrases. Vocal separation does not change the key or tempo; use a suitable audio editor or choose another backing version if an adjustment is needed.
  • Confirm the arrangement. Rehearse repeated sections and the ending. If you trim or adjust the audio, save a new copy and practice with that same version.

Use audio you are authorized to process, and check the permissions for any sharing or public performance.

Make a backing track for your next practice

Upload your song to TuneStem, preview the instrumental, and download the accompaniment you want to sing over.
